The Reductionist
Documentary | 2024 | 16’13
The Reductionist is a profile of Daniel Garrett, who ran a DIY harm reduction organization in Jackson, Tennessee. An active opioid user himself, Garrett found himself an outsider in the world of professional harm reduction. The film is an intimate profile of someone trying to carve a life out for themselves in the face of isolation and the constant threat of imprisonement.
The film was shot in 2022, and premiered at the Green Mountain Film Festival in 2024. It is not currently available to watch online and will make up a section of Index Drift 2, my ongoing anthology series.
Daniel’s life has changed quite a bit since we made this film. He now lives in the midwest. The film was commissioned by The Gravel Institute, but completed after they ceased operations.
I’m still actively screening this film and would welcome any opportunities to do so.
